Newcastle is a proud and ancient city with a modern vibrant heart. Sometime known as the party town it also has quiet places, nooks and crannies, parks and gardens, some stunning architecture. A castle, two cathedrals as well as three universities; art galleries and (our favourite) some brilliant coffee houses. For those of you who enjoy a walk to more than just the shops (loads of them as well!) This is for you

Walk Number 3 Monument to Civic Centre
A nice easy one
with the temptation of the shops on Northumberland street on the way. For those who can resist there's some beautiful 1960's architecture to be seen and can I point out the building is made from portland stone NOT concrete as some of the wags teased the city council with when the building was finished. Hardly needed but here for you anyway is

Walk Number 5 Ouseburn to City Centre
A continuation of walk number 2 - where you leave off at the end of the quayside. We'd advise you follow the map on this one, it would be easy to wonder off track. Interesting things to see - old tunnels, grungy remains of the industries that made the area thrive back in the day. Art galleries, artists studios (when open days are on) and a host of cafes that serve great food and coffee - they aren't always what they appear to be . . .

STAIRS 1- Saint Anns Stairs. Found at the end of Walk 2
A twisty turney modern staircase leading from the quayside (towards the eastern end) up to Saint Anns Church with the Ouseburn beyond. Take care, one or two of the treads are missing, so much for the materials of today.
Use map from walk 2 and

STAIRS 3 - Dog Leap Stairs
Found at the bottom of Dean Street - a straight line downhill from Greys Monument. Takes you to the Black Gate, part of the castle from which Newcastle got its name. Medieval heart of Newcastle. Stairs are famous for the route John Scott (later Lord Chancellor of England) took on horseback as he eloped with Bessie Surtees

STAIRS 4 - The Castle Stairs
From the quaside walk past the Jacabean House from which Bessie Surtees eloped - keep to the right - and as you pass the turning for the Swing Bridge on your left look for a narrow opening (still on your right). You've found the stairs!
